Climate change continues to have a disproportionate impact on the
most vulnerable communities around the globe, including migrants and
communities of color — people who are typically marginalized in our
society.
Justseeds, in collaboration with CultureStrike,
has forged partnerships between artists and frontline environmental
justice organizations to create this provocative, limited-edition art
print portfolio called We Are the Storm, which highlights the effects of climate change on these communities.
The portfolio draws inspiration from the powerful work of grassroots
groups that are championing creative and community-based solutions to
combat climate change, and resisting industrial fossil fuel projects,
such as the Tar Sands projects, the Keystone pipeline, fracking
operations, destructive mining practices, and the transporting and
burning of toxic fuels.
he featured artworks bring voices from
frontline communities most impacted by global warming and destructive
environmental practices to the forefront of the climate change
discussion.

Voices From Outside
During the summer of 2008, Justseeds completed Voices From Outside – a portfolio project in association with the Critical Resistance ten year anniversary conference in Oakland, California, which took place on September 26-28th. Critical Resistance Ten was a gathering of activists, educators, and allies of prisoners who came together to promote organizing efforts against the monstrous excesses of the US prison system.
The portfolio project involved twenty artists and one artist collective from the US, Canada and Mexico. Each one created an original print that either critiqued or addressed alternatives to the prison-industrial complex. Each artist pulled 100 prints and mailed them to Justseeds headquarters in Portland, OR, where the portfolio was assembled and then distributed.
Justseeds archived two portfolios, sold 20 to recover the costs of creating the portfolio, and each artist received one copy. The majority of the portfolios were then donated to Critical Resistance and 23 other groups who are organizing against the prison-industrial complex. In the end, each portfolio included the 21 prints plus a CD with copyright-free high resolution image files of the prints (as well as other anti-prison images from the recent book Reproduce and Revolt, edited by Justseeds members Favianna Rodriguez and Josh MacPhee.)
The portfolios have been used in a multitude of ways: exhibitions, presentations, and discussions have been organized in numerous cities to bring more attention to the prison reform and abolition movements, graphics have found their way onto flyers and periodicals, and some organizations have auctioned their portfolio off as a way of raising funds.
